Don't Wait for the Dough to Rise

He said what he was going to do, told them how to be prepared for it, and then He did exactly what He said He would. And it was terrifying. The Israelites wanted out of Dodge, but the Egyptians didn't want to lose the workforce that had served them for the last four hundred years. That said, God had a plan, laid it out, and executed.

The cool part to me is that He was so confident in His plan, He not only told them how He would get them out, but once He did, He told them how to celebrate the event for all time...before it even happened. "Listen up, boys, I'm going to do some crazy stuff, they are all gonna freak out, give you a bunch of their stuff, and send you packing. Then, for the rest of your life, throw a week-long party in just this way, so you and your kids never forget. Only one catch...you'll have to move quickly, so no yeast in your bread, you won't have time."

I still don't know what yeast or leaven really is or how it works. I just know it makes bread fluffy, light, and delicious. I also know that just a little bit spreads unseen through the entire lump of dough. Just like sin does to our body.

"Celebrate this Festival of Unleavened Bread, for it will remind you that I brought your forces out of the land of Egypt on this very day. This festival will be a permanent law for you; celebrate this day from generation to generation." (Exodus 12:17)

The Israelites were awoken in the middle of the night by the sound of loud wailing. Oh snap! He wasn't kidding, they must have thought as they jumped out of bed and started moving. God had taken out the firstborn son of all of the Egyptians just like He said He would. That is our signal, time to go!

It's awesome to know that in due time, God does exactly what He says He will do, no matter how frightening or fantastic it sounds.

We can trust Him.

This event is also such a great reminder of how powerfully the little things we do that we shouldn't, can impact our entire lives. The sins we try to cover up grow unseen by the outside world, eating away at our insides. So much so that we become captive to them. BUT, as Christ passes over and through our lives, He leads us out of captivity, making our dough pure again.

Do what you say you are going to do. Listen to God and follow His instructions, even when they seem crazy. Celebrate the good things in life and never forget all that God has done for you. Teach those lessons to your children, and when sin enters your heart, don't let it stick around long enough to become a slave to it. Don't play around, ask Jesus to rip it out and lead you out of captivity. Don't wait for the dough to rise; go now.
