Go Get a Cheeseburger

My wife, Susan, and I were like a couple of three-year-olds armed with a raging curiosity, a healthy dose of confusion, unhindered persistence, and the word “why”. As everyone does from time to time, we were in a wrestling match between our imagined reality and the truth, talking through some pretty curious emotions and what to do next. We had a lot of questions, wanted a few answers, and much to our chagrin, God decided that this section of the syllabus would be covering patience and faith. I was ready for recess.

Life just has a way of doing that to people. It is called being human, and unfortunately for those of us on this side of heaven, it is impossible to make sense of it sometimes. We felt stuck, so we decided the next best step would be to take a walk in the sun and eat a cheeseburger. (The cheeseburger being my idea).

"Oh, how great are God's riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!" (Romans 11:33)

A few lines before the above verse in the book of Romans, Paul writes: “For God’s gifts and His call can never be withdrawn”. There is great hope in that! He then goes on to say, however, that how He decides to bring those about, we have no earthly idea! It is wacko how He works sometimes, but he works all of the time.

When the mysteries of life spin your emotions into hyperactivity, and at the same time paralyze your feet, there’s only one thing to do…do something.

We spent some very important time just talking through the good, the bad, and the ugly of the day, with a lot of “grateful fors” and “wondering whys”. We asked God to help us understand, free us from the burden of trying, or to change it. Then we took a walk. The process moved some of the energy down from our brains and up from our feet, meeting together in our heart. While it didn’t change the reality of what we were working through, it shifted our perspective and gave us calm and hope.

Some days, you are the windshield. Some days, you are the bug.

Be thankful for both, and when you just can’t understand why, join the club. Hold firmly to the hope that God’s promises always come true and He is at work in ways we may never understand. Ask him to lift it off your shoulders and carry it for a while. Then take a walk and eat a cheeseburger…and possibly some ice cream, that always seems to help.
