The Daily Grind with Matt Clarke

Leprosy

Written by Matt Clarke | March 23, 2026

He was traveling towards Jerusalem, and as he was entering a border town between Galilee and Samaria, a group of ten lepers shouted out to him for help. They were out there in the first place because of their condition.

Leprosy is a highly contagious disease that can spread through the air by coughing and sneezing. It causes rashes and lumps on the skin, and I guess kind of gross and uncomfortable. I imagine the villagers would cast these lepers to the outskirts of town to socially distance themselves and avoid spreading the disease. Jesus, in response to their cries, simply looked at them and said, “Go show yourselves to the priests”. And they went. They were immediately healed.

That’s it? Just “go”? One look?...yup. Sometimes all it takes is the willingness to ask the right person for help and the courage to accept it and act. Far too often, we just sit on the outskirts and whine about our problems and aren’t willing to ask for help or take the courageous steps to get better. You aren’t defined by your condition, but by who God says you are.

In effect, Jesus was saying quit complaining, go show the very people who told you to get out of town, that you are okay. Here is where the story gets real. (Well, I guess it already was...)

"One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, 'Praise God!' He fell to the ground at Jesus' feet, thanking him for what he had done. This man was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, 'Didn't I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?' And Jesus said to the man, 'Stand up and go. Your faith has healed you." (Luke 17:15-19)

Only one of them came back to say thank you. Dang!

Why is it that so often we simply just take for granted the things others do for us, as if it is expected?

Like we deserve it. We are in such a culture of entitlement that we don’t even notice when something good is done for us, and too often we fail to say thank you. We just run off and say, “Look at me!”, and unfortunately, find ourselves down the road waiting on another blessing.

Three takeaways:

  1. Asking for help and acting upon it can change your life
  2. You aren’t defined by your condition
  3. Say Thank You.

If you want your relationships and business to be abundant, ask for help, trust God, and show consistent gratitude to those who help you along the way.
