No Experience Necessary

There were people of all backgrounds and places in life-- old (well…more seasoned), young, and everywhere in the middle. There were blue-collar, white-collar, no-collar, doctors, teachers, and students. Also, there were new boots, old boots, and leather shreds that used to look like boots. Some with money, some with sense, and people from everywhere, from Brussels to Honduras, with a language barrier that was real.

All that to say, when we gathered around to listen to our Honduran foreman pray over the bridge we were there to build, we were all the same in the eyes of God and understood every word. We weren't Americans, Hondurans, or Europeans; we were just God's children doing our chores together.

When I watched the team stretch cable, cut pipe, treat metal, drill holes in just the right places, and solve problems they never solved before with people who don't speak the same language, it was a beautiful reminder of the way God shows up when people gather in His name and do the work they are called to do. No experience necessary.

"Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it's in your power to help them. If you can help your neighbor now, don't say, 'Come back tomorrow, and then I'll help you.'" (Proverbs 3:27-28)

When we step in to help our neighbor, God shows up with the tools needed. You can fake caring, but you can't fake showing up, and when you double down on both, bridges get built. These bridges are built across cultures, language barriers, co-workers, friends, strangers, and yes, rivers as well.

It's in your power to help your neighbor today.

Do whatever that looks like for you right where you are. It doesn't need to be in another country or even another building. Look around and fill a need. Any need. And in doing so, you are building a bridge between one heart and another.

And don't wait until all seems just right or when you think you have the resources, experience, or the tools required. The only hands you need are the ones attached to your wrists and the willingness to let God use them.
