On Your Mark and Set

On your mark..... Get set...... GO!!! All of us are familiar with that sequence and probably had a distant memory come to the surface when reading it. A time on the playground, a scene in the back yard with siblings, an actual track meet or just watching a race on TV. The focus on getting your feet just right for launch, the anxious anticipation to burst forth, and the heart thumping in your chest. It seems like forever between stanzas as you just want to run!

I've seen athletes tailor workouts specifically for the "Go" part. Train for hours to generate a split-second advantage at the starting line. More spring, more power, more speed. Painstakingly honing their technique in such a way that when the call is made, they are first.

But what if there was no mark? Where would you start? What if no "get set"? No prep time, no warning? Just GO! Would you know what to do? Would you be ready? Would you even run, or just stand there confused waiting for more instruction?

"A few days later Mary hurried to the hill country of Judea, to the town where Zechariah lived... At the sound of Mary's greeting, Elizabeth's child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit." (Luke 1:39-45)

When Mary learned she was pregnant with the Son of God she didn't stand there in confusion wondering what to do. She got up and hurried to where God sent her. She was chosen because she lived on her mark, set and ready to go when God called. She heard, she went. No hesitation.

Life doesn't usually offer the courtesy of a warning call. Most situations or opportunities don't announce their coming with all participants standing in line ready and waiting. Nope. Most of the time we just hear "Go!". And more often than not, we hear the echo because we weren't present and it's too late.

When you show up today, are you on your mark? Are you present, alert and energized, paying attention to the people and opportunities around you? Or are you just stumbling on to the track wiping the sleep from your eyes trying to get motivated? Are you set? Have you done the prep work, are you in position, practiced your steps so when the time comes, you know what to do, what to say and how to say it?

When God says GO! Will you? Will you even hear it? Will you question the call, debating with yourself if you should? Negotiate with God that you would....but. Are you living on your mark and set?

Mary didn't know why she was sent to Elizabeth, just that she was. So she hurried there… no wait, no hesitation, no second guessing. In doing so, she carried with her and delivered the very Holy Spirit of God. Even the baby inside of Elizabeth lept with joy from her presence. That's what living a life on your mark and set looks like. A life of power and love and of sound mind, meant to share with the people around you and those you are called to go to. When you hear the word GO, will you? Are you on your mark and set?
