The Daily Grind with Matt Clarke

Pesky Thorns

It's something that I really struggled with for a long time. So much so, that it took years for me to do it in earnest and still weirdly feel bad in the process. That said I've also experienced the growth that comes from it and new, healthier life that sprouts after pruning a plant or a tree. I had to realize that cutting back was actually fostering growth. Even though those branches still appeared to have some life left in them, they were sucking nutrients from the healthier parts of the tree and once removed, the stronger branches flourished and new branches sprouted.

One particular tree I have to trim often is a short, little palm we have in the back yard. This one is a deceptive monster. It looks so pretty with its branches fanning out, weeping towards the ground and offering shade and protection beneath. A thing of beauty until you go to trim it back. Then you discover the devil thorns lurking underneath. It only takes a few encounters with these to realize you need to be very careful when tending to it, or your hands will look like a war zone before you're finished. They hurt, big time and sting with every puncture.

"They wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head, and they placed a reed stick into his right hand as a sceptor. Then they knelt before him in mockery and taunted, 'Hail! King of the Jews!' And they spit on him..." (Matthew 27:29-30)

You thought you had it bad. I can still feel in my mind the pain I felt when the first palm thorn pricked my hand years ago. I simply cannot fathom the torment of an entire crown of thorns being thrust into my head and pushed down in mockery. The rage I would feel as they spit on me and restraint of knowing I could take them out in a flash, but love even them too much to do so. Crazy!

Some days can feel like that. The suffering is real and the pain feels never ending. Deals fall apart, families fight, people get sick, relationships falter and it feels like everyone around you is just mocking and judging you. Jesus reminds us that despite that, hold on. Don't quit, he went through worse so you don't have to. And although the moment feels insurmountable, the moment will pass and you will overcome it, just like He did.

Life has thorns. Branches need to be removed. You need to trim back in some areas so that other areas can grow to their potential. It’s unpleasant. And when you feel the sting of those thorns pressing in, have faith. That's actually part of the process. The only way to get to something is to go through something. While not pleasant in the moment, if you trust the one who proudly wears your thorns as His crown, He'll see you through.

Cut back, ignore the mockers, stand firm and do your best to avoid those pesky thorns, but when they sting, have faith, don't quit, you will overcome.
