A System to Get Started

As I sat here thinking about what to write, my mind was jumping from one thing to another, never landing on any single idea long enough to form a concrete thought. It reminded me of the mental tyranny that so often plagues us when we just aren't sure what to do because of either a lack of options or too many. (Try ordering at the Cheesecake Factory.) When these moments hit, we tend to fall into a mental paralysis and fail to take action. The key is to do something.

Mark Twain once wrote: "The secret to getting ahead is getting started. The secret to getting started is breaking your complex, overwhelming tasks into small, manageable tasks and starting on the first one."

This is where having systems in your life around the most important activities becomes so important. Those systems, if properly constructed, offer a map to a desired destination. A great morning routine, for example, offers a map towards a healthy mind, body, and heart. If well constructed and committed to, you don't have to think about what to do each day. You just get up and execute the system.

Success in sales requires a system, also. It comes down to making the calls. A well-constructed system will help you move from wondering who to call to actually making calls. Matt Ricci, one of our production leaders, uses the following system:

He is not thinking about who to call. He has a system that tells him when and who. He has broken the complex and overwhelming things down into small, manageable tasks and sets his mind to execution.

"So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control." (1 Peter 1:13)

Prepare your mind for action and exercise self-control. Self-control leads to discipline, and discipline leads to results. When the overwhelm of life causes mental paralysis, have systems to step into that lead you towards what's most important.
