The Beach Bum & The Millionaire

In October 1981, forty-five years ago this month, the average 30-year mortgage rate hit about 18.6%. Eighteen. Some of you weren't born yet. Some of you were, and you remember the fear in your parents' kitchen.

Loan officers sat by phones that didn't ring. Real estate agents wondered if anyone would ever buy a house again. Plenty of smart people said the business was finished. It wasn't. People still got married. Babies still arrived. Families still outgrew apartments. Homes still got bought. The folks who kept making calls, kept learning, and kept serving people were still standing when the market turned. Many of them built the careers we're standing on today.

In Jeff Olson's book, " The Slight Edge", he says there's a beach bum and a millionaire inside every one of us. The difference between them isn't talent or luck. It's the small, simple things we keep doing, or quietly stop doing.

The part that I want to encourage you with is this: you already know how to do what it takes. The habits that got you through the hard seasons are the same ones that will carry you into the good ones. You don't need a new playbook. You just need to keep running the one that got you here. Or look at the playbook of the people around you who are winning right now, and do that. The discipline, the activities, the smiles, attitude and energy and love for others. In other words, do the next right thing, over and over and over again.

And Olson isn't only talking about money. He's talking about the whole life: your work, your marriage, your kids, your friendships, your joy.

So here's my small twist on the beach bum. Keep his ability to enjoy a sunset. Laugh at dinner. Sit on the porch. Call an old friend just because. Then let the millionaire handle the discipline: the next call, the next follow-up, the next morning in the Word. You need both. A grind with no joy wears you out, and joy with no grind lets you drift.

Sunrise doesn't happen all at once. At 6 a.m. it barely looks like anything is changing. But it's getting brighter every minute, whether you notice or not. That's how faithfulness works. It's quiet at first, then it compounds.

If this market feels like 5:45 in the morning, gray and cold, remember that the light is already coming. Your job isn't to make the sun rise. Your job is to keep walking the path.

What's one simple discipline that has carried you through a hard season before? Are you still doing it?

Pick one "millionaire" habit today, like five extra calls or one past-client check-in. Pick one "beach bum" joy too, like a long dinner or a walk with someone you love. Do both, and don't feel guilty about either.

Be relentlessly faithful about the small things and the sun will shine upon both the beach bum and the millionaire inside you.
