The Formula

George Washington Carver was born into slavery and abject poverty. Orphaned with limited access to even basic schooling, he became one of the world's most impactful agricultural scientists, transforming American farming through potatoes and peanuts.

From a one-room log cabin in rural Kentucky with barely enough food and heat to survive, Abraham Lincoln read by candlelight and eventually became the 16th President of the United States. Effectively saving the Union and abolishing slavery, in many ways, he transformed the world.

At a very young age in upstate New York, John D. Rockefeller had to work to support his struggling family. Eventually securing some modest bookkeeping jobs, he ultimately built Standard Oil into one of the world's most powerful companies and pioneered worldwide philanthropy efforts.

On his deathbed, the runt of the litter fighting for his life as a young puppy when my wife, Susan, rescued him, our golden retriever, Louie, outlived all of his siblings and effectively ran our household for over 15 years before retiring on the beach.

And King David, another runt of the litter, went from insignificant shepherd boy to the most powerful leader in the kingdom, following the very heart of God.

"He took David from tending the ewes and lambs and made him the shepherd of Jacob's descendants-- God's own people, Israel. He cared for them with a true heart and led them with skillful hands." (Psalm 78:71-72)

You don't need to be born in Camelot to have a kingly impact in this world. God has given you everything you need and even laid out the formula.

  • Care for people
  • Have a true heart
  • Lead with courage
  • Develop your skills
  • Put your hands to work
  • Trust and follow God

I remember a hike I was on many years ago during a very dark and doubtful time in my life. Feeling desperate, unloved, and confused. As I worked my way up the rock-covered hill, I noticed a sapling growing out of a tiny little crack in a huge boulder. As I stepped around it, I heard God say, "If I can grow a tree out of this rock, I can do great things in your life as well. Keep going and trust me." I did.

It's not where you came from, it's where you are going.

Keep climbing, keep learning, keep serving, keep loving. Sprout right where you are planted and be encouraged by the impact you are having. Grow good fruit in whatever garden you have been placed in. Become a king.
