The Grind

The process was laborious, required the right equipment, and was an essential part of daily living. Grinding wheat into flour typically occurred in the early morning in order to produce enough yield for their daily bread. The ancient Israelites would use an elongated basalt stone called a saddle quern to put the grains on, and then take a smaller stone and run it back and forth like a saw to grind it into flour. Basalt is a specific type of stone that has high density and toughness, with a rough surface that could take hold of the wheat while it was being processed.

Later, in the time of Christ, a rotary hand mill was created to make the process a little more efficient. Two round millstones were stacked on top of each other like an oatmeal pie, with a spindle holding them together. The grain was fed into a hole in the spindle of the top stone, and a handle allowed a person to rotate it, grinding the wheat between the two stones until it spilled out the side.

The process was literally a grind, and had to occur every day if the family wanted to eat. Over and over and over again, they got up, did what had to be done in order to provide for their daily bread.

That's life. We take the resources available to us and grind them into something that provides for us, our families, and our community. There are days when it's hard, really hard. There are days when we just don't want to do it. When the weight of the stone feels so heavy, we think we are the ones being crushed underneath it. That is why the promises of God are so important. The hope of God never fails, the Bible says. He promises goodness, joy, and peace for those who believe and trust in Him. And that makes the grind worthwhile. Not easy, but worth it.

"I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit." (Romans 15:13)

Whenever you feel more like the wheat than the stone, just keep grinding. There is great purpose in the process, and you don't know just how good it will be when all is said and done. When you trust God and do the work you have been called to do, joy and peace will fill you and pour out on others.

There is hope in the grind. As I filter my life through the word of God and the love and grace of Christ, I find great peace. There is peace in knowing I'm not alone. There are instructions on how to handle every situation. There is rest for my anxious soul, and encouragement that while I may be walking in the dark, dangerous valley of death, He is right there with me to lead me out. Most times I put myself there, and every time He says, " Let's go, follow me, I paid your ticket. You are free to go".

I pray the source of hope will fill you completely with joy and peace. I pray you have hope in the grind.

If you want to walk with me through it, I'd love for you to check out my new book, "Hope in the Grind".
