The Morning Fog

I wish I had her back. She was a beauty for sure. Well, truthfully, she could use a little shine here and there, but she was mine and because of that, she was beautiful. A Rustoleum gray, 1979 GMC pickup, three on the tree and more miles to count. Oh, I miss that truck.

It was the truck I learned to drive a stick on, and subsequently how expensive it is to replace a clutch. I learned how to unjam gears, the importance of a working gas meter, thermostat and radiator, and that water only goes so far to prevent overheating. I learned how to change brakes and shocks and why the right tools make everything better. I learned the importance of proper braking techniques while driving in the snow and without a lot of weight in the back, a rear wheel drive truck isn't all that great in the winter.  I also made friends with Verne, our local mechanic. Come to think of it, when I was 17, I couldn't wait to get rid of that truck!

"How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog - it's here a little while, then it's gone." (James 4:14)

I can get so caught up in what I want tomorrow to look like, I forget to savor today. I want, I dream, I strive, but do I enjoy? Do I cherish the moment or lament what's missing?  If I'm not careful, life can be like a 17-year-old boy, reluctantly driving a 1979 pickup, while dreaming about a 911. Constantly frustrated about what's broken and needs repair and forgetting about the memories he was making. The drives to the beach, the parties in the woods, the ski trips, big box speakers, alpine stereo and skipping school. And that I actually had a car....with heat.

I'm not saying be complacent. No, complacency is a dream sucker. It is good to be constructively discontent as that will motivate you to dream and achieve. But, if you don't learn to cherish the here and now, you may never enjoy life before it's done and gone.

Today while you are dreaming about and working towards an epic tomorrow, work equally hard at appreciating and savoring the present.

The 911 is possible but enjoy driving that old truck while you can. It's a memory maker!  Life is like the morning fog, enjoy the ride before the mist is gone.
