What’s your walk-up song?

“Clean your boots off” is a mindset I learned the hard way.

Whatever dirt, mud, or grime you’ve been walking through all day—clean it off before you drag it into the house…. or leave your boots outside altogether. The same principle applies to how you walk into anything: your home, your next meeting, a presentation—whatever it is. A focused mind and the right energy make a huge difference.

If you want to connect with the people in front of you, you have to bring the right energy. As Churchill production leader Denese Carty says, “Everything needs a walk‑up song.”

We all respond differently and have personal rhythms—some intentional, some subconscious—that help us prepare our hearts and minds for action. Some use breathing techniques, some seek quiet, some pray, some use physical movement. Denese uses a walk‑up song: music she plays as she walks on stage to speak, or more often in the car, at home, or in the office before an important engagement to reset her mind.

Scripture reminds us of the power of what we allow into our hearts:

"And whenever the tormenting spirit from God troubled Saul, David would play the harp. Then Saul would feel better, and the tormenting spirit would go away." (1 Samuel 16:23)

One lesson Denese teaches is that happiness is a personal responsibility. You can’t make someone happy. You may help create an environment that points someone toward the choice, but it is still a choice—regardless of circumstances. When we fail to make that choice, not only do our own lives stagnate, but the people around us and those we love suffer.

When asked how she makes the choice to be happy each day, Denese chooses a great walk‑up song. Like David playing for Saul, the right music—and the right focus—can change the atmosphere.

So how are you showing up today?

Are you dragging mud into the room—or are your shoes clean, your feet tapping, and your spirit lifting others as you walk in? Are you bringing the weight of the world, or the peace and anointing of God into the conversation?

Choose joy. Choose engagement. Choose light. If you want to maximize your impact, play a great walk‑up song and get your mind—and heart—right for impact.
