Matt Clarke's Morning Messages

Nothing is Auto-Magic

Written by Matt Clarke | October 28, 2025

It's auto-magic! Those are words I'll never forget. We were in my office many years ago, evaluating a change to our primary software. The one we were looking at was the industry behemoth at the time, but more expensive than other options. I still remember the salesperson's name and check my wallet and wash my hands every time it comes up.

Question after question, the answer was "yes, it does that". It sounded too good to be true. How difficult to use? Auto-magic! How difficult to install? Auto-magic! He could have sold a left-handed football bat to a rocket surgeon...or at least lied trying.

"The buyer haggles over the price, saying 'It's worthless,' then brags about getting a bargain!" (Proverbs 20:14)

Ever feel like you are negotiating in good faith and the person on the other end is nodding their head yes on the outside but knows it's a no on the inside? Ever buy something with the promise of transformation, only to find another layer of investment with no return? Yeah... me too.

It's hard to know who to trust. After all, I have yet to meet someone selling something who cares more about your results than their revenue. The key is finding the balance between the two. I remember one particularly long negotiation where we just couldn't come together. I finally said, "Bring me a deal that you would personally sign up for, and I'll consider it." They never came back.

I've found that taking my time, walking away from the table, and seeking a lot of counsel are solid ways to improve decision-making. My natural tendency is to want to remove the burden of a decision as fast as possible. I've also found that when being hasty, I've made decisions I regret. The time you take should be proportionate to the investment you risk.

Nothing is auto-magic, demos aren't real, and truth hides behind the shine. Everything looks great on the showroom floor. If it's important enough to put a warning in the Bible, we should probably pay close attention. And if you are the one doing the selling, make sure what you deliver brings more value than what's expected. You will stand out, and customers will come back for more.
