Broom Sweeping

Standing there in somebody else's mess, I had a few choices. I could complain about it, I could walk away and hope the people would be back to clean it in time, or I could do something about it. I chose action. There was a broom in the garage, so I could start making progress. The simple act of sweeping out the garage calmed my anxiety and kick-started the momentum needed to get the house ready to move in.   

The experience reminded me of two important lessons. One of our core foundations at Churchill Mortgage is to be a broom sweeper. Whoever is closest to the broom sweeps. It doesn't matter what your job title is; if there is something that needs to be done and you are capable, then do it. Also, make sure that you do your job in such a way that it doesn't leave crumbs for other people to clean up, and then go help others get their jobs done as well. Being a broom sweeper multiplies productivity, generates momentum, and enhances your team.

"For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light." (Mark 4:22)

The second lesson is that all the dirt that was hiding behind the furniture is a good example of how most of us live our lives. We think we can hide the things we don't want others to see. Ultimately, that is impossible. Most of us need to spend more time cleaning up the corners and behind things, or the dirt will build up, and life will become messy. We all have issues. Don’t hide them. Claim them, learn from them, turn from them, and prosper.   

Being a broom sweeper is an important concept in life. It applies to your team, business, family, and especially your own mind. Sweep up around your habits and behaviors consistently if you want to avoid a big mess later.
