Matt Clarke's Morning Messages

Make Friends with the Big Guys

Written by Matt Clarke | October 17, 2025

My mouth was always bigger than my muscles. Add to that a healthy dose of what my brother called "little man syndrome", where my attitude reflected a chippiness that defied my physical stature, and I had some tough cards to play.

I knew this, decided I could use it as a motivator, and chose to do three things:

First, I would decide what I wanted to be good at and worked hard at developing those skills. Second, I hit the gym. I might as well do the best with what I had. If I couldn't be big, I would at least try to be tough. Third, and perhaps most importantly, I made friends with the big guys!

"But the Lord stands beside me like a great warrior. Before him, my persecutors will stumble. They cannot defeat me. They will fail and be thoroughly humiliated." (Jeremiah 20:11)

Who you surround yourself with makes all the difference.

Building your personal and professional teams with people who are complementary to you is so important. Having the humility to own the truth of where your weaknesses are and fill them with people who can close those gaps. Friends and teammates who can lift you up and fight alongside you in hard times, and keep you grounded and on track in good times.

I was in a conversation with a friend this week who said he found peace in his life when he realized God was enough. That he didn't have to go around fighting in every corner to prove himself, but that God loved him for him and would stand with him in every battle. Since God is a great warrior, he can be too if he stands alongside Him.

You can't control the cards you are dealt, but you are responsible for how you play them. Choose to do the work necessary and surround yourself with people who can help you play them wisely. Make friends with the big guys, especially the biggest of them all.
