Get Out of the Basket

Written by Matt Clarke | February 19, 2026

It was scandalous that Moses was even alive. When the new king took over, he surveyed the land and realized he had a growing problem. Egypt was becoming increasingly diversified. The Israelites that were shown favor by his predecessor had grown to such masses that he feared they would become too strong to control. So, he decided to lay a heavy hand down, oppressively putting them to work, exploiting them, and managing their population by killing their babies. But one baby in a basket disrupted the king's long-term strategy.

When Moses was born, his mother hid him in a basket, near the river, for Pharaoh's daughter to find. A perfectly executed maneuver to plant a spy behind enemy lines, he was cared for and raised as part of the royal household. For decades, God prepared him for the job ahead.

"Moses was taught all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in both speech and action." (Acts 7:22)

Moses was taught wisdom, and he developed the ability to articulate with clarity and back it up with action. A triple threat and formula for success.

  1. To gain wisdom, you have to have a teachable spirit. Becoming an expert means a constant pursuit of information and spending enough time with that information to know how to use it. That's wisdom.
  2. Keeping all that wisdom to yourself doesn't help anybody. You have to share it. You have to learn how to articulate in such a way that you influence people, role-playing, practice, and communicating often to the point of mastery. Being the expert without being able to communicate effectively doesn’t move the needle.
  3. Be a person of action. Say what you are going to do and then do it. People follow courageous action. Lead.

A lot of talking without the knowledge to back it up or the action required to put it to work makes you a blowhard. Putting all three together makes you a powerful leader and a person of influence.

Become powerful in both speech and action. Pursue wisdom, put in the work to become a master communicator, and force the habit of taking action. If you want an audience with the king and to lead yourself and others to what's possible, you have to have something to say, know how to say it, and take the first step. You gotta get out of the basket.
