"You don't get what you don't ask for."
This is a statement I use with my family so often that I can see them all rolling their eyes as I'm writing this. Want a little more time on a paper?...ask for it. Want a free upgrade?...ask for it. Help with something?...ask for it. An exception?...ask.
Recently, I was in a meeting going over some loans that we have, where an “I” wasn't dotted or had a few uncrossed Ts. We had one in particular that we were struggling to find a solution for. The team simply concluded, let's just ask for the exception...Novel! Then later in the day, our finance team told me about a victory they had on a contract negotiation they resolved, saving us a lot of money, because they kept asking…Brilliant!
The worst that can happen is they say no, but they could say yes, and wouldn’t that be awesome! The presumption of "no" steals what's possible. This is especially true when it comes to your faith. The Bible says, if you ask God for wisdom, he will give it to you...so ask.
"Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. You parents- if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him." (Matthew 7:7-11)
My life is full of hanging chads that need to be pulled, rough edges in need of smoothing, and cracks that could use some filler. And many of these I don't have the ability to resolve, outside of fervent prayer. So I ask and I keep on asking until God delivers or convicts me that I'm asking for the wrong thing.
Don't presume you know the answer...ask the question.
Even if a long shot, you don't get what you don't ask for. So ask, have faith, be bold, be patient, and be in awe of how much your Heavenly Father will provide if you just ask Him.
