Great Books and Great People

John Maxwell, one of my favorite authors and speakers, shares a lesson from one of his mentors who told him many years ago that five years from now he will be exactly the same as he is now except for the books he reads and the people he meets. In other words, if you truly desire growth as a person, it takes a healthy dose of feeding your mind and surrounding yourself with great people.

Reading is such a critical part of learning and growing. Choosing to read all kinds of books from a variety of viewpoints is also essential, as we must challenge our minds to grow them. Like growing any muscle, it starts with breaking it down so it can grow back stronger. Often, people consume books that simply affirm what they already know and believe instead of challenging their thinking. It’s safe, but in my opinion, it may not lead to a deeper understanding and ultimately gaining wisdom.

Choose to read things that feed you, challenge you, and inspire you.

Maxwell further teaches six steps on how to surround yourself with great people:
1. Have a great desire to do great things for other people. Desire will provide the courage and persistence required for accomplishment.
2. Go where great people go. Find ways to be around people better than you. You must intentionally seek out the influencers you want on your team. If you are already the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room.
3. Do what great people do. If you want what great people have or to do what great people do. You must be willing to do what they did. The path is not easy. It takes hard work, courage, and persistence.
4. Be unforgettable. When you get the opportunity to meet great people, be prepared. You must
stand out (in a good way) from everyone else. I like to say be so awesome that you simply cannot be
ignored.
5. Live out your great vision. Don’t say what you are going to do, start doing. When you live your vision, it becomes contagious, and you need others to carry you and your vision forward.
6. Be greater on the inside than on the outside. People are attracted to who you are, not what you do. Back to reading, you must be constantly filling up your cup and growing from the inside out. An empty bag doesn’t stand up.

Do you desire growth? Do you desire to accomplish great things? Do you desire to leave your world better?

Consume great books and surround yourself with great people. Then do it again, as you never want to stop growing, and as you grow, the higher the level of people you want to seek out.
