I met recently with a group of teammates who all made a formal commitment to grow. To grow as people and as professionals, and to put in the work together to make it happen. They realize that there is a big difference between want and will. A lot of people "want" better results, but lack the "will" to do what it takes. As my pastor says, "Everybody wants to be strong, but nobody wants to be sore". Results take work, consistency, endurance, and the will to fight through the pain that leads to progress. This group committed to get off the sidelines and onto the field and they were a joy to spend time with.
At one point the question was asked, "What do you do when you achieved a particular result in the past, but don't believe you can get back there again?"
"What do you mean, 'If I can?' Jesus asked. 'Anything is possible if a person believes.'
The fatherly instantly cried out, 'I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief.'" Mark 9:23-24
What a raw and honest question. In fact, in many ways, the answer lies within the question itself. It's a matter of belief and in order to move from doubt, through wonder, and into belief, you have to deconstruct your thinking and work backward from your desired result. In golf vernacular, play the hole from green to tee.
So if you want to generate particular results:
This is where coaching, reading, and self-care come into play. You will be the same three years from now as you are today, except for the people you associate with and the books you read. The RIGHT people and the RIGHT books will offer the RIGHT information (and encouragement) to shape your thoughts; couple that with the confidence, energy, and endurance that comes from physically caring for yourself, and you're off to the races.
Guard your thoughts from doubt and fear and the people who sow them (especially yourself).
Feed your mind with better information to promote higher level thinking to produce more powerful beliefs, and to spark consistent actions, leading to specific habits that yield desired results. Endure the pain of change and growth along the journey.
If you want progress but no pain, time to shift your thinking…and find people and books that can help...today.
