Matt Clarke's Morning Messages

Is the Student Ready?

Written by Matt Clarke | August 28, 2025

The people at Churchill Mortgage are truly exceptional. If you're curious to learn more, I’d be happy to connect! Today's message is another reason why this is true.

We were having a very pleasant dinner with an extraordinarily talented teammate who had come to town for the day. As we rehashed the day and all of the people he got to spend time with, he mentioned how surprised and grateful he was for all the things the Marketing Team could help him with. It was both overwhelming and exciting. He went on to say that if he had those conversations years ago when he first started, he didn't think it would have sunk in. He just wasn't ready, as he was focused on all of the other aspects of his business. But now he was in a position to execute. The information was always there; he just wasn't ready to receive it.

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

I was recently asked what my thoughts were on why and when people successfully engage in coaching. In my experience, I said, they have to have both the desire for change and the humility to recognize they can't do it on their own. They have to be a willing student and align with the right teacher.

"Can one blind person lead another? Won't they both fall into a ditch? Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher." (Luke 6:39-40)

If you are blind to your need for growth or desire to change, no coach can help you. You just won't be open to picking up what they put in front of you. Additionally, if you recognize and desire change, it's important to find someone who sees things differently than you so they can help transform your thinking, not just reinforce the mental anchors you already have set. More of the same, just gets you more of the same.

Are there areas in your business you want to see improve? What about your personal life or finances? It starts with you. Your thinking first, then systems and processes next. Too often, we look to systems and processes before we realize our thinking needs to change in order to make those work. We all believe our thinking is correct, and as one thinks, one does.

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. Do you desire growth or change? Do you have the humility to let someone help? If you are stuck in the best that you know how, seek a teacher who can lead you to the best that can be done. And when they show up, engage with gratitude and willingness.

Is the student ready? The Good Teacher is waiting.
