Keys to a Successful Season

Two stories unfolding at the same time, both with very similar circumstances and yet very different outcomes. It was the start of the NFL season, the first game of the year, and teams were figuring themselves out. Thanks to cool technology, I could watch my two favorite teams play at the same time and was feeling pretty good about both at halftime. Then the second half hit.

With one game, you could feel the demeanor of the team come out flat, almost as if they believed they were going to lose. Watching them, you could just tell that it was only a matter of time before they would fall behind and never recover. And that's exactly what happened.

In contrast, in the other game, my team wasn't playing well at all. They were sloppy, gave up some big plays, made mistakes, and the game went back and forth, leaving them behind with just a little bit of time left. But they had an attitude about them that you could feel. They played with grit, a bit chippy, and their quarterback executed like he knew they would win. And that's exactly what happened.

“A lazy person’s way is blocked with briers, but the path of the upright is an open highway.”

The difference between success and failure...attitude with effort.

As you look at the task in front of you, do you see all the ways you can get through it, or do you see all the reasons it will be hard? Opportunities or excuses? The briars that will harm you or the open highway that will take you where you want to go? Oh, even with a great attitude, you will get cut, scraped, and likely damaged a bit along the way. Jesus certainly did, but in the end, He knew the price of victory, and He never wavered.

A determined attitude to come out on top is infectious to those around you. Couple it with the right amount of effort, and no matter what the scoreboard says, the team around you will rally until the last second. It doesn't mean you'll win every game, but if your attitude stays focused on the long-term victory and your actions are centered around doing the next right thing, you're bound to have a successful season, no matter what season in life you are in.
