Matt Clarke's Morning Messages

Light Up the World

“Your son is mentally deficient. We cannot let him attend our school anymore. He is expelled.” When Nancy read this private letter about her son, she felt compassion along with a deep sense of personal responsibility. If his teachers wouldn’t take responsibility, she would!

When Thomas looked up at his mother and inquired what the note said, she told him, “Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn’t have good enough teachers to train him. Please teach him yourself.”

Thomas Edison was now a homeschooler with a teacher who believed in him and took responsibility. Under her guidance, he developed a love for reading and science, even setting up his own chemical lab at home. His lights were definitely turned on.

"Get up, for it is your duty to tell us how to proceed in setting things straight. We are behind you, so be strong and take action." (Ezra 10:4)

The Israelites had just come back from captivity and were trying to get things re-established. The problem was that while they were getting the temple rebuilt, their behaviors were still a little sus. They needed a leader to step up and lead, and they knew Ezra was just the man to do it.

Things don't always go as planned.

When that happens, you have two choices: wait for someone else to take responsibility, or lead. Ezra and Nancy Edison took responsibility and led their people.

What about you? Do you usurp your responsibility to teach and train your children or team, or do you do it? When you get a bad report, do you blame the system or create your own? When the wheels come off, do you bury your head in the sand or step up and grab the reins?

Nancy Edison believed in Thomas, and that belief, coupled with the hard work of responsible leadership, lit up the world. Get up, be strong, and take action!
