Meant for Greatness

Hunger and humility must outlast success. Complacency is one of the biggest enemies of greatness. Just ask the Atlanta Falcons, who in 2017 were winning the Super Bowl by 25 points midway through the third quarter. The game was in the bag. They put a lot of points on the board, and they became complacent.

Tom Brady and the Patriots, however, despite having already won five Super Bowls, remained hungry. In the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history, they rallied as a team, never once letting off the gas, and walked away with a victory in overtime.

I met with a leader this week who had already notched a few Super Bowl-worthy seasons on his belt. He has career points on the record books that most mortgage professionals would pat themselves on the back for, and look forward to playing golf and canasta at the country club. Not this one. We worked on taking the team that's already at the top of the leaderboard and making adjustments so that the last 15 years will look like a warm-up compared to the next 15. That's what hunger looks like.

As we talked, the key concern was always the team, their families, and their long-term opportunities. That's what humility looks like. It wasn't a discussion about how much money he could make, but how much the team could grow and accomplish together. The entire discussion added some gas to my already full tank.

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere- in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8)

Jesus didn't go through what he went through to commission a bunch of candies to get their salvation and ride off into the sunset. Nope, he said you WILL receive power, and you WILL use it. And not just use it to win a few games, but don't quit until you've won the entire world. You will put yourself at risk along the way so that we can recruit others and bring the team to victory. He wasn't asking, and he went first. That seems like hunger and humility to me.

Don't rest on yesterday. We have a battle to fight today and a victory to achieve tomorrow.

You were meant for greatness.

  • What results will you be responsible for achieving in the future that will light your fire and fuel those around you?
  • What changes in your thinking do you need to make to transform your own behaviors and disciplines to align with those results?
  • Who are you taking with you, and what work and future are you calling them into?

You WILL receive power when you allow the Holy Spirit to come upon you, and when you do, be bold with it. You were meant for greatness.
