Miracles

“Do you believe in miracles?” Al Michaels yelled as the announcer at the end of the 1980 Olympic Hockey semifinals as Team USA beat the heavily favored Soviets.

I remember that moment so well. It wasn’t just a rivalry between two competing teams, but a parallel story of two nations that very much had the balance of the world in their hands. Thankfully, miracles are real. I see miracles all around me every day. They show up in the faces of people we interact with on a regular basis, whose silent story of overcoming lingers beneath the surface. People who have been to a place of despair, odds stacked against them, and yet came bursting through with arms thrown in the air in victory.

That is a big part of two of our core convictions: Leave people better for the encounter and Do the next right thing. Recognizing that people all around you are carrying an untold story beneath the surface. Your smile, encouragement, listening ear, or helpful hand may be just what they need to get through today.

With “Doing the next right thing,” we also talk about it in the vernacular of golf by saying “Hit your next best shot”. You may be living in a state of confusion right now. Be patient, keep swinging, hit your next best shot, even if it is just a short chip out of the woods. If you stay in the confusion and keep swinging, your miracle will come.

The truth is that a very wise person told me that we are all miracles.

Look back over the course of life and think about all the miracles that make up your story. Keep your eyes up ahead, and if you feel stuck, find someone willing to help. Persist, that next miracle just may not have happened...yet.
