Matt Clarke's Morning Messages

It's Not the Moment

Written by Matt Clarke | January 26, 2026

"All I can tell you, Matt, is: Don't bet your career on a moment." Those were the words I heard from a prior boss one day when I was a young executive, finally sitting at the adults' table, and I decided I would crack a joke, at her expense no less. I landed a punchline. She landed a punch. It was a valuable lesson.

While life is full of moments, our calling is not to live for the moment, but the long game, the end result, the finish line. In a moment, our thoughts can feel more important than they are. In a moment, our emotions can feel more reliable than they are. In a moment, our desires can seem more essential than they are.

In a moment, we can set ourselves back or lose everything if we bet our lives trying to scratch a sudden or short-term itch. Say that one liner, fire a verbal assault, buy the expensive car, cut the corner, satisfy the desire, or get behind the wheel when we shouldn't- in a moment.

"Don't store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moth and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be." (Matthew 6:19-21)

There are moments in life that can lift us up or knock us down. In my life, more often than not, I look back in regret when I have allowed the moment to trump the man. Meaning, I know the man God called me to be, and when I let my guard down and let the moment lead, I can hurt others and myself. I take a punch. Alternatively, when I manage the moment, I am able to move through it, maintain my integrity, and stay focused on the long game. This is true in business, my relationships, my family, and my private life (to everyone but God).

God has granted us a place in eternity and also the provision and grace to make the journey.

Don't bet your life or career on a moment.

Chasing treasures on earth is fun for a moment, but it won't last or get you to the end goal.

Know where you are heading in life as well as in your business. If the emotions of the moment won't lead you towards that goal, stop and think before you do something you will regret later. It is not the moment that matters; it is the man behind it.
