Founded in 1927 by Nashville businessman James Cowden Bradford Sr. with a $10,000 investment, JC Bradford & Co. sold 73 years later for $620 million. JC Bradford & Co. was not only the first Nashville-based investment banker to buy a seat on the New York Stock Exchange, but it also inspired Churchill Mortgage's most coveted recognition, the "Broomsweeper Award.
Early in his career, my great friend, mentor, and Churchill's founder, Mike Hardwick, was recruited by the firm. On one of his first days, he found himself across the desk from Mr. Bradford learning about the company and its culture. Mr. Bradford told him that around here, we operate under the theory of the broom. As Mike responded with an inquisitive, slightly confused, raised brow, head nod, his new leader continued with: "Whoever is closest to the broom...sweeps". In other words, if I walk by your office and your client needs a cup of coffee, it's my job to fill it up. If I see trash on the ground or the fax machine needs a new roll of paper or toner, it's my job to take care of it. Regardless of your position, there's no job too small. We simply help each other, no matter what.
"Dont be selfish; don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don't look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too." - Philippians 2:3-4
Imagine a culture where people compete to be recognized as the most helpful...
Too many people in this world scurry around in a self-important haze, waiting on someone to serve them or leaving dust in their wake for others to deal with. That's not okay. Make your own bed. Clean up your own mess. Take care of your business with excellence. And then help others make their bed, clean their mess, and get their jobs done with excellence. Pick up the broom and sweep.
Imagine a culture where people compete to be recognized as the most helpful, the one others can always count on, the one who picks up the phone, picks up their neighbor, and picks up the broom. That's Churchill...that's committing your work to the Lord...and that's you...if you make the choice to do so. Be a "broomsweeper".
