Pizza and Push-Ups

Written by Matt Clarke | November 11, 2025

Pizza and push-ups don't like each other. As luck would have it (either good or bad depending on your perspective), I enjoyed pizza two of three days. And very good pizza at that! So, it shouldn't have surprised me when my dog, Louie, had a look of disgust on his old gray face as he laid on the garage floor and watched me attempt to work out.

But every day means every day, so even too much pizza can't be an excuse to do what I need to do. Bad decisions on Sunday can’t lead to another on Monday morning.

Comfort and growth cannot co-exist.

If there are things in life that you have committed to do or strive to accomplish, then convenience and comfort can't be a part of the equation. Discipline begets more discipline. Comfort begets excuses.

"You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn't know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who, through training, have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong." (Hebrews 5:12-14)

I'm selfish with my time in the morning, so I can be generous with my time the rest of the day. I decided that my health is a priority; therefore, I must have discipline in my schedule and commitment in my heart, or sweet heat pizza will become my shape.

If you want a result different than what you have now in any area of life or business, it WILL require change, and change WILL be uncomfortable. That's just the truth. That's true about physical fitness, professional fitness, relational fitness, financial fitness, and spiritual fitness.

Is what you want important enough to live in discomfort long enough for it to feel normal? If not, it's just baby's milk that makes you lazy and dependent on others. Get some solid food (not pizza), chew on it a while, and grow into who God created you to be.
