Matt Clarke's Morning Messages

Pretty Good Company

I get a kick out of reading the "news". It's fascinating to me how the same facts can be reported so differently depending on the source or the reporter’s opinion. An event occurs, somebody says something or does something, and we immediately have five articles all testifying to their interpretation of the thing, and we call it "news". Layer on political, religious, or social beliefs, and the angles are endless. It's hard to know what's true anymore.

It reminds me of the old saying that there are three sides to every story: There's your side, there's my side, and there's the truth. As Pilate asked the crowds during the trial of Jesus, "What is truth?"

You'll never make everyone agree or happy. Heck, even Jesus, who did everything right, spent His whole life helping, healing, and serving everyone, upset so many people He was killed for it.

"For John didn't spend his time eating and drinking, and you say, 'He's possessed by a demon.' The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts, and drinks, and you say, 'He's a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!' But wisdom is shown to be right by its results." (Matthew 11:18-19)

One of life's greatest difficulties is discerning the right thing to do when the right thing isn't clear.

Sure, there are black and white situations like don't blow dry your hair in the shower, but more often than not, things are a little more gray.

Relationships, business decisions, and family decisions all present challenges and riddles to solve that are hard. There are plenty of opinions out there to consider, multiple perspectives to look at, and your own thoughts...and unfortunately, you can't believe everything you think, so you have to test those too.

For me, I start with God's word. The Bible says Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. That seems like a good place to begin. Then I layer of other people's advice, my own thoughts, and then filter that back through prayer. But then, we have to make the call. Heads or tails? Sitting in decision paralysis because you don't want to offend or upset somebody will get you nowhere.

Do the work, collect the information, make a decision, and let the results speak for themselves. Sure, people will call you a demon, glutton, drunkard, or friend of sinners. That's okay, you'll be in pretty good company.
