Save a Village

When the Samaritan village along the way denied Him access, James and John did exactly what most of us would. They pounded their chest and suggested taking out all of them. Show them who's boss!  

"But the people of the village did not welcome Jesus because he was on his way to Jerusalem. When James and John saw this, they said to Jesus, "Lord, should we call down fire from heaven to burn them up? But Jesus turned and rebuked them." (Luke 9:53-55)

Instead of using his power to make a point, he used compassion to make peace. Jesus knew that just because you wear a Red Sox jersey doesn't mean you shouldn't be kind to someone in a Yankees hat, even if they heckle you from the stands. Most of the time, it's something below the surface causing them to lash out, not the color of your jersey.   

It's the more powerful man who dishes out compassion over conflict.

People all around you are silently suffering. All kinds of pain, damage, hurt, and distraction that manifest themselves in outward behaviors that can cause negative reactions from others. Consider this when responding to a difficult person or potential conflict. Instead of fighting fire with fire, douse them with compassion and understanding and see how you can help. Leave them better for the encounter. 

Just like in sports, it is usually the reaction that draws the penalty. Instead of hitting them back, try helping them up. You just may be the hand Jesus is using today to save a village.
