Shed the Snakeskin

The plans were laid out in detail. The materials collected. There were step-by-step instructions on how to put it all together, specs on everything from the weight of the candle holders to how to conduct services.

Ratios of silver, gold, and bronze to make every article were communicated, as well as the proper fabrics to use for the curtains and the layout for the grounds on which the Temple would stand. Nothing was left to chance other than the will to actually do the work necessary to bring it about.

"Then David continued, 'Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Don't be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. He will see to it that all the work related to the Temple of the Lord is finished correctly." (1 Chronicles 28:20)

Far too often, you and I know what to do, how to do it, and what we want it to look like when it's done. And yet, we don't take action. We get stuck in feelings, fear, or are distracted by what's easy and comfortable, not impactful.

David encouraged his son Solomon to be strong and courageous and do the work. He knew that even though everything required to build the temple was laid out for him, the work still needed to be done, and it wasn't going to be easy. Nothing worth doing ever is.

When you step into your day today, do the work. Do the tough, uncomfortable stuff, not just the easy stuff. I know that sounds obvious, but you would be surprised how few people execute.

Do the tough and meaningful work first, and then fill in the rest of your time with everything else.

I heard recently that the only necessary support needed for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. When the snake was tempting Eve, Adam was there. Instead of lifting his heel and crushing its head, he did nothing, and we are still paying for it today. Following Jesus is not meant to be safe or comfortable. It's dangerous. It's seeing evil lurking around you and having the guts to step on its head and deal a crushing blow, even though you might get bitten. It's being strong and courageous in the face of popular culture and doing the work of Christ. It is not being confused by the world's cry for tolerance and standing for what is right.

You know what needs to be done. The plans are right in front of you. Shed the snakeskin of safety and comfort and do the strong and courageous work. God will see to it that it's done correctly.
