Sheep and Goats

It's a really hard thing for a lot of people. Some have just decided they really don't care if people like them or not, but I believe that most, by far and large, to some degree, do. That's why it can be so difficult for some people to take a stand, make unpopular decisions, or even speak in public. There is a risk that half the crowd won't agree, may be offended, or not like what you do or say. And that is risky if you measure yourself against what the crowd thinks of you.

Life has crossroads. Business seasons change. Tough decisions need to be made, and there are new courses to be charted. Not everyone can come, and people will complain. We have to be okay with that if we are going to make a difference.

Don't starve the sheep to entertain the goats. In other words, if you are more worried about popularity than doing what's right or speaking the truth, then expect your impact to be diminished and your fields to be overrun by the wrong species.

"God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way." (Matthew 5:11-12)

We have all been faced with some very difficult decisions. Things that seem to have so many angles, outcomes, and emotions tied to them, that is hard to think straight. When we run into those situations, process matters.

  • Gather more information
  • Analyze that information from multiple perspectives, not just your own predetermined desired outcome
  • Seek counsel - in the multitude of counselors, there's safety
  • Pray - The Bible says if you ask God for wisdom, he will give it to you
  • Make a decision and execute with confidence
  • Review the tape - things are fluid, and on-field adjustments may need to be made

Doing the next right thing usually results in some people not being happy with you. This is true in matters of business and especially true in matters of faith. Jesus says, be happy in that.

He didn't call us to be people pleasers but difference makers.

He didn't call us to be people pleasers but difference makers. That takes the courage to lead. And the courage to represent your Shepherd well. Don't starve the sheep to entertain the goats.
