Significant 33s

We recently celebrated Churchill Mortgage's 33rd anniversary. When Mike Hardwick founded Churchill, he believed strongly in many of the character traits of its namesake, Winston Churchill: to stand strong and stable in the face of adversity and instability, not compromise on matters of conviction, and to persevere, never quit, and do what's right.

Over three decades later, we continue to operate under those principles with a keen focus on leaving people better for the encounter and helping our teammates, customers, and their families live better lives.

As I thought about the number 33, I immediately was brought to one of the greatest basketball players of all time, Larry Bird. For my generation, Bird was the best (unless, of course, you're a Lakers or Pistons fan). He was tough, outworked everybody, prepared relentlessly, never quit, and made everybody on the team better. His attitude and will to win were infectious and permeated throughout the organization. The year before he joined the Boston Celtics, they had a fledgling 29-win season with 53 losses. The year after, 61-21, more than doubling the wins from the prior year...as a rookie. They would go on to win three championships and elevate the entire league throughout the 80s. Simply said, Larry Bird was a rising tide.

"Now bring the rest of the army and capture the city. Otherwise, I will capture it and get credit for the victory." (2 Samuel 12:28)

Joab was the leader of King David's army. He knew his job was to operate in such a way that brought honor to the king, not to himself. That's what being a great teammate is all about. Bring glory to the team and others, not headlines for yourself.

What kind of teammate are you? Do you show up on time every day prepared to win the battle?  Are you looking to pad your stat sheet or help the team make the playoffs? Are you leaving the next person in line better off or picking up your slack? Are you so focused on being right that you fail to try to understand others’ perspectives, helping them solve their problems?

Do you make the people around you better?

It was in 1933 that Winston Churchill began to warn the world not to trust Adolf Hitler. He was politically isolated for his beliefs, but he never backed down.

After 33 years on this earth, nobody left the world better for the encounter than Jesus. He was one heck of a teammate and friend and still is today...

Thank you, Mike, for creating a company that makes people better. As we celebrate number 33, let's emulate those traits of the great 33s before us!

And yes, for all you misguided Lakers fans out there, Kareem also wore #33!
