Matt Clarke's Morning Messages

Thanks for Taking My Call

Written by Matt Clarke | November 10, 2025

It's super early, super dark, and super quiet. The time in the morning when the only people up are those who have to be for their jobs or those of us who just can't sleep or need serious psychological help. I have something on my schedule that I don't want to do. It doesn't even matter what it is, just that I don't like that it is how I'm going to spend a big part of my day.

Not only is it stealing my day, it's trying to steal my morning too. When this happens, I default to reading. Reading real books with real pages made out of real paper. There is simply something different about holding a book versus staring at a screen, especially when that book is my old, beat-up, worn-out leather Bible. That is where God met me today.

"Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don't work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown in the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?" (Luke 12:27-28)

While I know I'm much more like the beat up, worn out, scratched, and faded leather on my Bible than I am the beautiful lilies referenced in this passage, the message is clear...chill out, dude...we got this.

As I continued reading, the second message intended for me popped up like a check engine light on my dashboard:

"Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble." (Proverbs 21:23)

Well, this is how I know God knows me.

Chill out and pipe down.

I don't know about you, but when I need something to transform my thinking, refocus my attention, stop my heart from rattling and head from spinning, I open up God's word and He tailors it to the moment. The Bible isn't an old book relevant to old times. It's both timeless and timely, as applicable to today as the day it was written.

Thank you, God, for always taking my call, and for giving me both encouraging words and sobering truth. Follow my lead, and it will be okay. Vomit a word salad, and you will be cleaning up your mess for a while. Stay calm and keep your mouth shut. Pretty timeless advice!
