The Wisdom of a Donkey

Donkey: "So where is this fire-breathin', pain in the neck, anyway?"

Shrek: "Inside, waiting for us to rescue her."

Donkey: "I was talking' about the dragon, Shrek."

What a great movie Shrek is.Full of weirdos, freaks, absurd plots, unlikely heroes, and talking donkeys. A lot like real life in many ways!!!

When I think about it, it's a great depiction of what we all go through every day. Surrounded by humans who are all different, people we just don't understand, angry dragons who aren't really evil, they’re just lashing out because they need a little help, a righteous battle to fight, little people pretending to be big (no comment), ridiculous moments to laugh at and yes the constant chatter of donkeys as we go about our day.

Years ago there was a guy named Balaam, a prophet who was summoned by a fearful king to place a curse on the Israelites as they began to gain momentum. After a few back-and-forths with God on the matter, Balaam saddled up his Donkey and went to do the deed. On the way, an angel that only the donkey could see tried to stop them. As his donkey freaked out, Balaam beat it to get back on track until finally, the Donkey turned to his master and said, "What the heck?!?!"

"Then the Lord gave the donkey the ability to speak, 'What have I done to you that deserves your beating me three times?' it asked Balaam."

At this point, I would be a little freaked out. When things get weird, we have to be patient.

Sometimes God uses even the donkeys in our lives to help us see things we just aren't seeing or don't understand.

Trusting God can get a little awkward especially when life looks a lot more like Shrek's swamp than Camelot.

It's often hard to decipher between God's voice and indigestion. He speaks to us through burning bushes, our subconscious with the Holy Spirit, angels who look like friends or ogres, clouds, and yes...donkeys. It's confusing, but be patient, keep listening, and ask for discernment. Over time, things will clear up...that's faith.

While annoying, sometimes those we think are donkeys are just trying to be an angel in their own special way. They may just see things differently, and that's okay. You may need to also.

Donkey: Hey, what’s your problem Shrek, what you got against the whole world anyway, huh?

Shrek: Look, I’m not the one with the problem, okay!? It’s the world that seems to have a problem with ME! People take one look at me and go 'Aargh! Help! Run! A big stupid ugly ogre!' They judge me before they even know me – that’s why I’m better off alone...

Donkey: You know, Shrek…when we first met, I didn’t think you were a big, stupid, ugly ogre...
