Matt Clarke's Morning Messages

Turning Trash into Treasure

Written by Matt Clarke | January 9, 2025

They are absolutely fantastic! I try to be around whenever they come by during their early morning run because they simply deliver a level of service I've never experienced before.

They call me "Pops" (like they do every gray-haired man in the neighborhood), and always greet me with a big smile, positive energy, excited greetings, and well-wishing goodbyes. When I can, I meet them with a "thank you", a bro hug, and a tip. When I'm not around, they go the extra mile and make sure they put my trash can back by the garage versus just on the street where they found it, like their predecessors would.

That's right...I said trash can. The sanitation workers who serve my house deliver some of the best customer service I've ever seen. So good in fact, they were recently surprised by the neighborhood and the local news honoring them in a segment.

JC Penny once said, "It is the service we are not obligated to give that people value the most".

“Work with enthusiasm as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. (Ephesians 6:7)

When I talk to my neighbors about them, they often comment on how much they appreciate the attitude of these two guys. They say they just deliver joy and unexpected care that others in their field never have. They remark how often they slip them a little cash and find ways to say thank you. That's how it's done!! The spirit of the Lord is alive and well in them. They leave people better for the encounter and they do it collecting trash! And people treasure them.

The company doesn't pay our salaries, our customers do. Show up every day with a responsibility to serve your customers in such a way that they choose to pay you for it. It has to be that good. It has to be beyond what you are obligated to give or it may not be worth paying for at all.

Work with enthusiasm as if you are working for the Lord...because well...you are. And that's a customer you don't want to disappoint!
