True Warriors

There are a lot of things to accomplish in this world that seem like great feats. There are great acts of courage and great examples of endurance. I have done a few that I'll always look back on and feel proud of those. But none measure up to what my friend will be celebrating: a year of sobriety.

Moving out of the clutches of addiction where your only sense of normal, comfort, or even love is under its spell, into a redefined understanding of reality, possibility, and freedom takes fighting and winning a daily battle mentally, physically, and emotionally. Those who are fighting to pull it off are true warriors in my mind and should be celebrated, encouraged, and supported because it is a battle without end.

We all have our battles to fight. Demons that lurk in the darkness of our mind and heart, just waiting on an opportunity to strike. Failures in our past and failures yet to come. Things that are self-imposed and others out of our control.

Most of us are either walking through a present storm, drying off from one that recently ended, or preparing for one to hit.

Most of us are either walking through a present storm, drying off from one that recently ended, or preparing for one to hit.

While storming through life, remember two things:

  1.  Win the day. One day at a time. As Coach John Wooden says, "Make each day your masterpiece."
  2. You aren't defined by your failures or struggles; you are who God says you are...and that's awesome.

"Your name will no longer be Jacob," the man told him. "From now on you will be called Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have won." (Genesis 32:28)

Everyone is fighting something. Some quietly, some for the world to see. Whatever yours is, rally a few warriors around you to help, and focus on what you need to do today to win. It's the only day that matters. And while you're at it, find someone who needs a wingman and be willing to ride alongside them. Do what you can. If you can't be there physically, you can always fight for them with prayer.

I read the below and pray it over you:

"Now may the God of peace- who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, and ratified an eternal covenant with his blood- may he equip you with all you need for doing his will. May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him. All glory to him forever and ever! Amen." (Hebrews 13:20-21)

I'm super proud of my friend and look forward to seeing what God has planned for him. Plans for good, not disaster. Plans for a future and a hope.
