Matt Clarke's Morning Messages

We Are...Marshall!

Written by Matt Clarke | November 5, 2025

On November 14, 1970, after losing a close game to East Carolina University, the Marshall football team boarded a plane in Greenville, NC, for the last time. The plane would crash just a few miles from its runway in West Virginia. There were no survivors.

An entire community was devastated, and a university where football had become such a part of its history had a huge void to fill. Someone had to step into the void and fill it with hope. Enter Jack Lengyel. Lengyel had just turned around the football program at the College of Wooster and knew that he could help. He raised his hand and said, "Send me, Lord," and off he went to resurrect a team, a university, and a community.

"With a prayer to the God of heaven, I replied, 'If it please the king, and if you are pleased with me, your servant, send me to Judah to rebuild the city where my ancestors are buried.'" (Nehemiah 2:4-5)

When Nehemiah saw that the city of Jerusalem was in shambles, he said, "Send me, Lord," and led the rebuilding process. Much like Coach Lengyel, he would be faced with opposition, fear, doubt, public outcry, and harder work than most would be willing to tackle. But the wall got built, and the city was restored.

After recruiting players from other sports, a bunch of freshmen (who were not allowed to play until Marshall got the rules changed) and walk-ons, Coach Lengyel led his "Young Thundering Herd" to victory against Xavier in their first home game of the 1971 season. Take joy in your trials, for they lead to perseverance, perseverance to character, character to hope, and the hope of God never fails.

At one point, Lengyel is quoted as saying, "It doesn't matter if we win or lose, it doesn't even matter how we play the game...it just matters that we play". Just show up, step into the void, and let's see what happens.

Show up, get on the field, and get into the game.

People are silently begging to be led. Why not by you? Send Me Lord. We ARE ... Mar-shall!
