What About Breakfast

Sometimes it's all I think about. I plan it out in my head each day and oftentimes a week in advance. I even schedule vacations and activities around it. If I allow it to, it consumes me. Food!

I love good food, and sadly, it captures a lot of my limited brain power. My dog, Louie, and I are a lot alike in that obsession. Scratch our heads every now and then and feed us well, and we will do just about anything for you.

If only I spent as much time thinking about and doing the work God put me here for as I do about food.

"Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, 'Rabbi, eat something.' But Jesus replied, 'I have a kind of food you know nothing about.' 'Did someone bring him food while we were gone?' the disciples asked each other. Then Jesus explained: 'My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work. You know the saying, 'Four months between planting and harvest.' But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe.'" (John 4:31-35)

Jesus clearly knew that food was important. Many of his interactions with people were centered around meals. He turned water into wine, fed thousands on multiple occasions, staged a last supper as his outgoing scene, and when he returned, cooked Peter breakfast. That said, it wasn't his purpose. Serving others was. And that is ours as well. That is why my first Core Conviction is to serve others, without exception.

Jesus didn't work so he could eat and drink. He ate and drank to prepare for his work. There is so much more we are capable of beyond what we believe in our day-to-day lives. Too often, I feel that I limit my belief in what's possible based on the resources, time, and energy I am willing to commit to an opportunity. Jesus left everything on the field and knew that when his tank ran low, God would deliver what he needed. How about you?

Don't wait for the perfect conditions to harvest.

Wake up, look around. The fields are already ripe. Let's go out and do the work we were put here to do.

...now what about breakfast...
