Matt Clarke's Morning Messages

Whiners Not Welcome

Written by Matt Clarke | October 30, 2025

The Israelites had escaped from more than 400 years of captivity and were finally standing on the borders of the land God promised to them as their new home. They had so much in their favor as they faced the challenge of occupying the land—huge numbers of warriors and a courageous, experienced leader.

The scouts they had sent to scope things out returned with a glowing report. The land was indeed very good. It was rich and lush for farming and produced an abundance of succulent fruit. They had waited so long for God’s promise to be fulfilled. Now, the time was upon them.

But, instead of jumping up and down in excitement about the opportunity before them, they grumbled in fear. The people were too big, the towns too heavily fortified, the fight too hard. Instead of rejoicing about the possibility before them, they whined about the process to get there. They didn’t realize that the struggle would hone their abilities and strengthen their faith. The Israelites didn't want to be uncomfortable, preferring the safety of doing nothing to the glory of change. The result? The Israelites did finally make it into the promised land, but not until all those whiners died while wandering in the wilderness. Their reward of a promised home had to wait for the next generation.

"And if the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us safely into that land and give it to us. It is a rich land flowing with milk and honey. Do not rebel against the Lord, and don't be afraid of the people of the land." (Numbers 14:8-9)

Change is hard. It requires doing things differently, and that is scary.

It is uncomfortable, painful at times, and usually full of naysayers. Change takes courage, and unfortunately, that is a dry well for most teams and organizations.

What potential change in your business holds great promise, but you or your team simply refuse to move? Why are you afraid? Try shifting your mindset from what you risk losing to what you might achieve. The bigger the opportunity, the harder the work and the bigger the risk, but it is worth it!

Don't surrender the promised land to the next generation. Stop whining about what it takes, go make it happen. Your future depends on it.
